"Don’t Bomb Niger Delta" - Ex Kaduna Military Governor, Umar Warns Buhari

Former Military Governor of Kaduna State, Col. Abubakar Umar(retd), on Tuesday warned President Muhammadu Buhari against deploying troops and military hardware in the Niger Delta to halt the activities of militants in the region.

Umar said the Federal Government’s planned use of force to rout out militants, especially the Niger Delta Avengers in the Niger Delta, was not the best option; adding that the militants were still amenable to dialogue.

President Muhammad Buhari was, in a statement credited to him by his Senior Special Assistant on Media Affairs, Mr. Garba Shehu, in Nairobi, Kenya, quoted to have said that he would treat Niger Delta agitators the same way he dealt with Boko Haram if they failed to negotiate.

But the former governor in a statement entitled, ‘War in the Niger Delta: A most dangerous option,’ argued that the militants could not be treated like Boko Haram insurgents that had killed over 20,000 Nigerians in the North-Eastern part of the country.
Umar argued that the Niger Delta militants could not be said to be terrorists in the real sense of the word, warning that collateral damages to any military option in that region would be colossal.

Umar said, “I am really frightened by the sudden escalation in the Niger Delta Region from where there are some reports of skirmishes between our security forces and the Niger Delta militants. This is happening after the President was quoted as vowing to deal with the militants as he did to Boko Haram.
“All factors considered, the use of military force in an attempt to resolve the lingering crisis is not a good option and must therefore be discarded.

“As a retired general, Mr. President is well aware of the serious and daunting challenges any military will face in its operations in the most difficult and densely populated Niger Delta region.

“The creeks are so heavily polluted with oil, rendering them highly inflammable. It will take the firing of a few high explosive shells to set the whole area on fire, resulting in the inestimable collateral damage among innocent civilians.

“It is also difficult to see how an armed conflict can secure our oil and gas assets in the region. Instead, it will aid the destructive activities of the militants and lead to the total shutdown of all oil and gas operations in the area.”

The former governor added, “Besides, the Niger Delta militants cannot be said to be terrorists in the real sense of the word. I believe they are amenable to meaningful dialogue.

“I need not to remind the President that a war in the Niger Delta will be opposed by most objective Nigerians and the international community as unjust and merely aimed at the control and exploitation of the region’s oil and gas resources.

“I therefore beseech you, Mr. President, in the name of all that is good, to continue to explore peaceful means of resolving the Niger Delta crisis as painful as you may find this. May God direct and guide you on the path of justice.”

“Nnamdi Kanu should henceforth desist from issuing any statement on behalf of Biafra in his own interest,” the statement read.
The group urged security agents to stop molesting or killing members of RE-IPOB as its security arm, Ogbunigwe, had been set up to protect Biafra people.

Jonathan And Niger Delta Governors used oil money as pocket money: Masari

The Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Masari, has said Niger Delta leaders must come clean on how they spent the oil money allocated to the region over the years.

“For six years,” Masari said, “we had a Niger Delta president. Let us see what difference he made in six years when he was president. When the excess crude account became pocket money, how much of the money went to the Niger Delta?”

In an interview published in the current edition of The Interview, Mr. Masari called out Niger Delta leaders, challenging them to “come clean” on how they managed the region’s resources.

According to a statement by the Managing Director/Editor-In-Chief of the magazine, Azu Ishiekwene, “the interview features Masari firing on all cylinders. He took on Senate President Saraki, explained why Obasanjo’s third term bid failed, and spoke, at length for the first time, on ‘budget padding.’ And then, he removed his gloves on his predecessor, Ibrahim Shema, and the Niger Delta.”

Although Mr. Masari did not name names, the reference to a Niger Delta president was apparently pointing to Goodluck Jonathan, the immediate past president, under whose presidency oil price averaged $100 per barrel.

Asked what he did to ensure accountability of oil money when he was Speaker of the House of Representatives and also a ranking member of the Peoples Democratic Party at the time, Mr. Masari said, “The House of Representatives has been friendly to the people of the Niger Delta than any other institution in the country.”

He asked the Federal Government to publish how much the region has received since the 13 percent derivation started.
The resurgence of violence in the Niger Delta by the Avengers since last year has led to massive losses in the country’s oil revenue and peace efforts have stalled.
On Saturday, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, said the Federal Government had spent over $40billion in the Niger Delta in the past 12 years.
The magazine’s issue also contains detailed interviews with Chioma Ajunwa and the world’s most famous foodies, the Roca Brothers.

Kuje Jailbreak: IPOB Accuses Security Agencies Of Plot To Kill Kanu

ENUGU—The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, said security agencies yesterday attempted to kill its leader, Nnamdi Kanu by firing canisters of teargas into his cell at Kuje Prisons, with the intention to suffocate him to death. Media and Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Comrade Emma Powerful made this known in a statement in Enugu yesterday.

The statement read: “The Federal Government and it’s secret police, the DSS through the prison authorities and warders in charge of Kuje Prisons have perfected arrangements to snuff life out of our leader, Mazi Kanu and those with him in the prison by separating the inmates who had misunderstanding with fellow inmates.

There were teargas and gun shots into Mazi Nnamdi Kanu ‘s cell for him to die systematically.

“However, we observed that the government and its security agents through their prison warders orchestrated the violence in the prison in order to have excuses to eliminate Kanu. “The orchestrated violence to be executed by prison warders started when the security agents shot sporadically towards the doors and windows where our leader Mazi Kanu and two other IPOB members were being detained.

“The prison officials went to search some prison inmates whose cells were very far from where Kanu and two others were kept but all of a sudden, they started shooting live bullets towards the direction where our leader was kept. The cannon of teargas was thrown inside the room that he stays.

“Right now, we don’t know the condition of our leader and others detained with him.

“We are calling on the international community, the United Nations UN, the African Union AU, lovers of freedom, Amnesty International, AI, Human Rights watch/NGO’s and well-meaning Nigerians who understand the meaning of self-determination to come to our rescue because right now, we don’t know the condition of our leader.

“We in IPOB family worldwide under the leadership of prophet Nnamdi Kanu are still intact in the pursuit of Biafra restoration irrespective of the attacks from the FG and DSS.

“We, however, call on the agents of darkness in our midst and in Biafraland and government to look for another place because IPOB under Kanu is intact, no factions or crises within us and nobody can divide this group which has the divine mandate to liberate the people of Biafra from the shackles of slavery and bondage.

“Nevertheless, all the members of IPOB are advised to be resolute, watchful and mindful of whom they allow into their midst. We congratulate the international community, all rights organizations/NGOs, Christian community and well-meaning Nigerians who deemed it so wise to advise Nigerian government to release Nnamdi Kanu and other members of IPOB and pro Biafra agitators detained in different prisons and security cells across the country.”

Ike Ekweremadu Reacts To Fulani Herdsmen's Attack In Enugu

Nigeria's Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has condemned the recent attack on a community in Enugu state by Fulani herdsmen.

In a statement by his media aide, Ekweremadu bemoaned the incessant attacks on parts of the country by herdsmen, saying it posed a grave threat to the peace, security, and economy of the country.

“This is another heartbreak, not only for Enugu State, but the nation in general; and whatever evil forces behind these reprehensible acts certainly do not wish the country well. It must not be condoned.

“The primary object of government is the welfare and security of the citizens. The Federal Government must take decisive steps to put a full stop to this wanton destruction of lives and property; and the security agencies must do everything humanly possible to ensure that the perpetrators of this act of wickedness in Akagbe-Ugwu do not go unpunished”.

The Deputy President of the Senate condoled with the affected community and prayed for the peaceful repose of the dead.

IPOB Splits Again: RE-IPOB Emerges, Sacks Nnamdi Kanu

ABA-The crisis rocking the Indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, on Thurssday, took a new twist with the emergence of a third faction claiming to be the authentic group representing the organization.

The new group, which parades itself as the Reformed Indigenous People of Biafra; RE-IPOB, disclosed that it has sacked the IPOB led by the detained Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu and the new faction; The Rebranded Indigenous People of Biafra, TRIPOB, which have Chima Philip Effiong Osuji, as its spokesman, stressing that both groups no longer have the right to speak for Biafra.

In a statement by its spokesman, Ikemba Biafra, the group who promised to disclose their leader on Monday 29th August, 2016, advised all pro-Biafran agitators to remain peaceful and warned security agents to stop molesting Biafran activists.

It claimed that Kanu has lost touch with realities of Biafra while TRIPOB has ‘nothing to offer’ as splinter group of IPOB.

According to the statement, “Both IPOB and TRIPOB have been sacked; they should no longer speak for the Biafran people. They are the same outfit and have nothing to offer Biafra. We warn that if Nnamdi Kanu , IPOB and the so-called TRIPOB continue their antics , RE-IPOB will be forced to make public the sponsors of the two groups. RE-IPOB will not accede to the burning of the Biafran flag as the sacked TRIPOB planned. The Biafran flag is sacred to Biafrans.”

The statement, however, added that RE-IPOB is open to dialogue if the Nigerian government is sincere in ending the protracted agitations for an independent state of Biafra, and warned that the group will not tolerate any insincerity from the government.

“If the federal government is sincere in its dialogue with RE-IPOB, then the Biafran flag can be exchanged with the Nigerian flag in the presence of President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Security Adviser, Director of State Security and the Elders of Biafra. If the dialogue is fruitful; then a peace treaty and a ‘no victor no vanquished tree’ will be planted at Gakem where the first shot of the Nigerian Civil war started and at Amichi Nnewi where the formal cessation of hostilities of the war began.”

Niger Delta Monarchs Meet FG, State Conditions For Peace

Ikechukwu Nnodim, Abuja

Traditional rulers and stakeholders from the Niger Delta on Thursday met the Federal Government and read out terms that would build confidence as well as restore peace in the region.

This follows the ceasefire announced by the Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups in the region on August 21, 2016.

In a statement, which was read at the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in Abuja by the Bolowei of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Chief Wellington Okirika, the traditional rulers listed six things the Federal Government should do in order to build confidence and stop the destruction of the country’s oil assets by militants in the region.

They said, “Having acceded to the call for a ceasefire by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, on August 4, 2016, the buck has now been passed to the table of the Federal Government as driven by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources – a representative of the Federal Government.

“For the purposes of building confidence in the system, we wish to state here that as a matter of urgency the Federal Government should appoint/constitute a Federal Government dialogue team; release the 10 innocent school children arrested by the Nigerian Army on the 28th of May, 2016 in Oporoza and others in detention on trumped up charges.

“Return the Golden Sword, being the symbol of authority in the Gbaramatu traditional institution; return the three traditional council speed boats in custody of the Nigerian Army; cessation of hostilities perpetrated by the military in the Niger Delta region; and equally important, the Federal Government should make a categorical statement about the opening of the Maritime University, Okerenkoko Delta State for academic activities in the 2016/2017 session.”

Kano Assembly Orders Removal Of Kwankwasiyya Inscriptions On Public Buildings

The Kano State House of Assembly on Wednesday ordered the immediate removal of all Kwankwasiyya inscriptions from public buildings in Kano metropolis and other local government areas of the state.

The directive followed a motion by Alhaji Baffa Babba-Dan-Agundi, member representing Kano Municipal Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Education. The motion was unanimously adopted by all the 40 members of the State Assembly.

The House urged the 44 local government councils to comply with the order within one month. The House directed that the Kwankwasiyya inscriptions, linked to former Gov. Rabiu Kwakwanso, be replaced with the names of prominent citizens of the state.

Meanwhile, the development had heightened suspicion that the animosity between Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje and his predecessor had taken a new dimension.

The House had also on Wednesday screened a commissioner nominee, Hajiya Yardada Maikano-Bichi, whose name was submitted
on Monday.

Avoid The Jonathan Error, Sanusi To Buhari

The current Buhari-led administration may end like the Jonathan administration if it fails to retrace its footsteps, the Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi II, has warned.

Sanusi, who was the chairman, Special Session at the 15th Joint Planning Board and National Council on Development Planning, said if the Federal Government toes the way of the last administration, it will end up like it.

He said the economy created terrorism, following the government’s inability to create employment opportunities for the over 80 million youths in the country.

He lamented that the country has not been able to attract investments, saying that the example of Lagos State typifies what Nigeria can achieve.

He warned those he described as “clamouring to break up the country because of oil” to stop the agitation, stressing that oil would soon become insignificant globally.

The emir said, “There is nothing we are facing today that we did not know would happen. We made mistakes, many of them deliberate. We ignored every single warning.

”We should not continue to blame the previous administration, as we have also made some mistakes in the current administration.

“We must retrace our steps; otherwise we may fall into the same trap we fell the last time when the government was always right.

“The bottom line is that if your policy is wrong, it is you that must change.”

National Assembly Is Broke: Ali Ndume Declares

Senator Ali Ndume made a shocking claim stating that the Nigerian national Assembly is broke and is having problems meeting up with its financial obligations.

Ndume said this in reaction to newspaper reports that the legislature was facing financial challenges, he said that the situation was so worrisome that legislators were not receiving their allowances as and when due.

“I know that the whole country is in financial difficulty, not only National Assembly.

I have been in the National Assembly since 2003 but things keep getting worse; I think they paid us last month’s salary on the 16th of the following month or thereabouts,” Ndume told newsmen in Abuja.

He said it wasn’t only lawmakers facing this problem, but other arms of the government are also facing a lack of funds.

“It is not only with the National Assembly, some states have not been able to pay salaries for six months, one year.

Some states were even asking their workers to go and farm for two days and work for the other three days in a week.

Even in the Presidency, they have tightened their belts on their expenditure and so, it’s a general phenomenon in the country.

We used to receive running costs or allowances quarterly but now it is monthly and it doesn’t come as and when due,” he said.

He also hit out at claims that lawmakers had an easy life and also stated that the presumption that lawmakers were corrupt is a false one.

“If the national assembly is so corrupt and you can make much money, then tell me one national assembly member that is living in luxury after leaving office.

Some of my colleagues who lost out in the 2015 election are struggling to pay their children’s school fees, some of them are even struggling to take care of their health.

If national assembly was where you come and make a lot of money, how come one year after leaving you cannot meet your basic needs,” he said.

We Will Sell Attack Aircraft To Nigeria, If They Can Afford It: John Kerry

ABUJA (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry made "very strong commitments" on ways to ramp up military assistance to help Nigeria defeat the extremist group Boko Haram, a senior U.S. official said on Tuesday.

In talks with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, Kerry "made very, very strong commitments to the government that we are going to look at what we can do differently," the official said, adding that Kerry had told his staff to look at ways to boost military cooperation with Nigeria.

The official said Kerry had stressed that more needed to be done in working with neighbouring countries, as well as Britain and France, "so we can ramp up and bring this fight to closure."

The U.S. is currently considering the sale of attack aircraft to Nigeria, which is subject to review by Congress.

"We have been working with them to make sure they can afford it, and they know how to use it," the official said.

The official said a large part of the conversation during the one-hour meeting at the presidential villa in Abuja was dedicated to ways of boosting economic growth in Nigeria.

Nigeria is in the middle of its worst economic slump in decades. Falling oil revenues have hit public finances and the value of the naira, Nigeria's currency.

The United States has long pushed Nigeria to loosen its grip on the currency to help boost private investment.

"It was a huge topic," the official said of the discussions about the economy during the meeting. The U.S. has previously offered to send experts to work with Nigeria's treasury.

"The Secretary made offers to provide additional assistance on the economy," the official added.

Buhari noted during the talks that the situation in the Niger River Delta, where Nigeria faces violent unrest from local militants, was "making it hard for the government to continue to address the broader problems."

What Kerry Discussed With Buhari And Governors

The United States has pledged more support to Nigeria’s anti-graft fight even as it praised President Muhammadu Buhari’s courage.
“We applaud what you are doing. Corruption creates a ready-made playing field for recruiting extremists,” visiting U.S. Secretary of State, Mr John Kerry, told Buhari at a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa yesterday.

“You inherited a big problem, and we will support you in any way we can. We will work with you very closely. “We don’t want to interfere, but will offer opportunities as you require,” Kerry said.
He was also quoted to have pledged to assist in tackling the humanitarian challenges in the north-east. He said the U.S would get the United Kingdom, France and others “to augment the support.”

“Nigeria is priority for us. We won’t miss the opportunity to work together, because you are making significant progress,” he said.
President Buhari in his remarks assured Nigerians that the ongoing anti-corruption campaign in the country will be institutionalized and made to last beyond the life of his administration.

Presidential spokesman Femi Adesina quoted Buhari as making the pledge at the State House in Abuja yesterday while receiving American Secretary of State, Mr John Kerry.
“We will insist on the standards we’re establishing. We are laying down administrative and financial instructions in the public service that must be obeyed. Any breach will no longer be acceptable.

“We will retrain our staff, so that they understand the new orientation. And those who run foul of these rules will be prosecuted, no matter who is involved. But we will be fair, just and act according to the rule of law.
“Anyone perceived corrupt is innocent till we can prove it. We will work very hard to establish documentation for successful prosecution, and those in positions of trust will sit up,” the president said.

He appreciated the US intervention in the 2015 general elections in Nigeria, affirming that “America did not do it because of what it stands to benefit from us. You did it for the Nigerian people. It tells so much what the U.S stands for in the world.”
On the Boko Haram insurgency, Buhari thanked the U.S for both their hard and soft military help.

“The training and intelligence that we could not muster ourselves, we received. The training has made Boko Haram less of a threat to Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin region, while the military hardware has given our troops added confidence,” he said.

The president also told Kerry that though the militancy in the Niger Delta had impacted negatively on the economy and affected the positive intentions of international and local investors, his administration was showing restraint.
Speaking on the economy, Buhari said his administration’s focus was on diversification having learnt lessons from years of over-dependence on oil.
Earlier, in Sokoto, Mr John Kerry lamented that corruption cost the global economy USD 2.6 trillion every year.
Delivering a speech on the importance of resilient communities and religious tolerance in countering violent extremism at the Sultan Palace, Kerry said developed countries were not doing enough to improve good governance globally.

“We are not collectively yet doing enough to improve good governance and that need to be changed because we are all paying for corruption as it costs the global economy USD2.6 trillion every year which ought to be spent in providing infrastructures, education, health and to ensure food security,” he stated.

According to him, the fight against corruption has to be a global security priority of the first order and that developed countries have to help other countries to eliminate corruption in their midst.

“Bribery, fraud and all forms of criminality endanger everything that we own, everything that we value and encourage human trafficking, discourage accountability in governance and undermine the community,” he stated.
On the fight against terrorism, Kerry said Nigeria and itsallies had succeeded in degrading Boko Haram, but that this should be seen as the beginning of the fight.
“People join violent groups because they have trouble finding meaning or opportunity in their daily lives, because they lost hope in the future, because they lost confidence in legitimate government and they are really frustrated,” he said.

He maintained that one of the central tasks was for Nigeria to work towards removing vulnerability through building and rebuilding trust in government and the military. Trust creates citizens,” he stressed.

Sultan: We’ll continue to work with everybody for peace

Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar yesterday pledged Nigeria’s commitment towards working with the rest of the world to ensure global peace.
He said: “We will continue to work with body to have a peaceful world.”

The Sultan gave the assurance when he received the US Secretary of State, John Kerry who paid him a courtesy call at his palace in Sokoto.

He lauded the choice of Sokoto for Kerry’s speech on the importance of resilient communities and religious tolerance in countering violent extremism‎.”It will further make our state and nation to be a model for peaceful coexistence,” he noted.

Earlier, the US Secretary of State acknowledged the efforts of the Sultan of Sokoto and the state Governor towards fostering peace and development.

He noted that the leaders were deeply engaged in building community of tolerance, understanding and inclusiveness. The efforts, he noted, “are pushing back against those who misinterpret the religion of Islam and extremism.‎”
Kerry stated:”I come here today on behalf of people of the United States and president Obama to express our solidarity with you in your effort to build a place that is prosperous and peaceful, we respect your work.”
Also, Sokoto Governor,A‎minu Tambuwal said the state remained very peaceful with tolerant and accommodating people.

He asserted that the choice of his state for Kerry’s speech would further position Sokoto on the global map.
Yesterday’s visit would make the third time that John Kerry has visited the country in the past 20 months, and has met Buhari on several other occasions.

B/Haram: We’re open to dialogue – Shettima

Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima has said that his state and the federal government were open to dialogue with the Boko Haram insurgents.
He, however, said dialogue had to be held with credible leaders of the sect.
Shettima spoke yesterday with State House reporters after he and his counterparts from Sokoto, Zamfara, Bauchi and Kwara States met with American Secretary of State, John Kerry.

The governor was responding to a question on the warning by Kerry earlier yesterday in Sokoto on government’s handling of the Boko Haram.
Shettima said the country was now in a position of strength to negotiate with the sect, adding that a holistic approach was being adopted to tackle the insurgency.
“Because the Boko Haram is not a uniformed outfit with shared ideology and focus, their perspectives differ a lot.

It’s like the Bermuda Triangle- on one hand, you’ve the economically induced Boko Haram who are amenable to dialogue who can lay down their tools and be part of the reintegration process of the de-radicalisation process of the rehabilitation and resettlement process. And then, we’ve the die-hards that have been called the nihilists, people who are hell-bent on a suicidal path and there is very little you can do and you cannot even talk to them from a position of weakness,” he said.
He said though the humanitarian crisis in the North-east was dear to the US, Nigeria had to recognise that nobody could solve her problems.

“We’ve to take charge of our destiny and do what is right to take care of the needs of our people,” he said.
Shettima said Borno wanted all its internally displaced persons to return home by May 29, next year.
He disclosed that there were challenges of early marriages, child prostitution, drug abuse and gangsterism in most of the IDP camps.

Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal said Kerry specifically expressed the commitment of the US government on girl-child education, healthcare and renewable energy.

Okowa's Convoy Kills Elderly Man As Journalists Escape Death

Pandomonium broke out on Friday last week when Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa's convoy killed an elderly man in Umutu community, Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State.

SaharaReporters reliably learned that the governor and his convoy were returning from the meeting of the Niger Delta Coastal States in Warri, jointly convened by former Information Minister Edwin Clark and Mr. Okowa, at around 5-6 PM when the accident happened in Umutu community.

It was gathered that journalists who were in the convoy of the governor narrowly escaped death during the accident but sustained severe injuries. The driver of the vehicle, whose name was given as Isaac, was injured in the accident.

Narrating the incident to SaharaReporters, a government house staff who was in the convoy said that while returning from Warri after the event, the government house press crew bus in the governor's convoy that was carrying journalists and cameramen rammed into the elderly man who was driving a pickup vehicle.

According to our source, the elderly man was rushed to Abraka Hospital and then referred back to a hospital in Asaba where he died following shortage of blood and severe injuries.

"The bus that killed the man was driven by one of our drivers called Isaac. Several journalists and cameramen would have been dead by now but God saved them. So many of them were seriously injured and taken for treatment in government house clinic,” he said.

"Youths in the community almost unleashed terror on the convoy but the presence of the governor and other top government officials salvaged the situation which could have turned bloody. Governor Okowa had to personally come down from his car to appease the people. The driver as I talk to you now is still being detained in Asaba by the police," our source stated.

One of the journalists in the convoy who pleaded for anonymity told SaharaReporters that the governor's convoy was in high speed when the accident occurred, adding that the governor did not caution his drivers to drive at a moderate, safe speed.

Our source also disclosed that Mr. Okowa has concluded plans to send a government delegation to the family of the deceased to open a discussion on how to settle the matter for burial.

As at the time of filing in this report, several phone calls to the Delta State Commissioner of Information Patrick Ukah for commentary were rebuffed.

IPOB SPLITS: Breakaway Faction, TRIPOB, To Burn Biafra Flag On October 1

The Rebranded Indigenous People of Biafra (TRIPOB), a breakaway group from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) led by Nnamdi Kanu, has picked October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day, to publicly denounce Biafra Republic and burn its flag.

According to Chima ‘Phillip Effiong’ Osuji, who released a statement on behalf of the group on Wednesday, CHIMA “PHILLIP EFFIONG” OSUJI, the decision was taken on Monday at the end of an emergency meeting of “disaffected” IPOB members.

TRIPOB said it now sees the Biafra question “from a different perspective”, as Biafra will now become “a powerful metaphor for change, development and greatness of the Igbos inside a united Nigeria”.

It said it had “accepted the fact that the Biafra Republic is not a reality but an anachronism”, and doubts that the south-south region will ever become a part of a Biafra Republic, except by force after a declaration of another civil war.

THE FULL STATEMENT

At an emergency meeting convened by some disaffected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Monday, August 22, 2016 in Aba, Abia state, it was resolved that due to the rigid and fatalistic position of the Nnamdi Kanu led IPOB, several of us with like minds shall breakaway and form The Rebranded Indigenous People of Biafra or TRIPOB.

TRIPOB now sees the Biafra question from a different perspective. Biafra will now become to us a powerful metaphor for change, development and greatness of the Igbos inside a united Nigeria, where the South East axis will be a utopia from the sheer determination borne out of the Biafra metaphor.

We believe in being a part of a united Nigeria, and a new way of thinking, where the victim mentality will no longer be acceptable.

We have accepted the fact that the Biafra Republic is not a reality but an anachronism, and doubt that the South South region will become a part of a Biafra Republic, except by force; after a declaration of another civil war.

That the lessons and history of the civil war will only reinforce the belief in ourselves to reach the zenith in this great country, Nigeria, where opportunities abound for every one regardless of tribe or religion, and even where such narrow sentiments exists, we will not see ourselves as victims. Never!

In view of this new mindset, members of the TRIPOB and any new defectors will on October 1, 2016 make a public denunciation of a
Seccesionist Biafra Republic at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

The event will also include recitation of the Pledge to Nigeria our Country, singing of the National anthem, followed by a solemn burning of the Biafra flag and unveiling a new Biafra flag representing pride, change, potential and spirit of the Igbo race which can thrive any where in the world.

Long live the Biafra Spirit! Igbo…Kwenu!!!

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria! Nigeria…Kwenu!!!

I Did Not Bring Buhari To Power – Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday debunked newspaper reports quoting him as saying that he and a few others brought President Muhammadu Buhari to power.

He dismissed the reports as baseless, untrue and calculated attempts to smear him.

Obasanjo, who is in Jalingo, Taraba State, said President Buhari was overwhelmingly voted by many Nigerians.

“ No single individual or group can claim that glory,” he said.

During a courtesy visit to Governor Darius Ishaku, Obasanjo spoke about the economic potentials of the state.

He said the Mambila Plateau in Taraba had the potential of becoming the hub of tea production in Africa.

He expressed determination to promote the tea production potential of the state using his connections and experience.

“ The Taraba tea factory is a symbol of national greatness. The tea potential of this state can attract global demand and earn the nation foreign exchange,” he said.

Obasanjo noted that beside tea, the state also had potentials in cattle rearing, poultry, power generation, among others.

“ The livestock potential of this state surpasses any kind of cattle rearing known in this country.

“ likewise in poultry which of course is in commercial quantity.

“ The Mambilla Hydro-Power Project, if completed, has the capacity to generate more than half of our power demand in this country.

“ Therefore, Taraba is indeed a blessing to this country,” Obasanjo said.

There are over 50,000 hectares of land suitable for tea production on the Mambilla Plateau.

PDP Labelled Me Disloyal For Refusing To Share Money – Osunbor

Former governor of Edo, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, said Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) declared him disloyal his refusing to share the state’s resources to party leaders.

Osunbor, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the 2015 general elections, disclosed this at APC’s campaign rally in Iruekpen, Esan West Local Government Area, for the Sept. 10 governorship election in the state.

He described the PDP as an "evil party", whose interest was not for the development of the state, but to share the resources among party leaders.

He said that such mentality of the party was reason for the defection of prominent sons and daughters of the state to the APC, adding that PDP was a "sinking ship".

"Evil people have hijacked the PDP; the party is a sinking ship, which is why I have told my people to act like the former president, Obasanjo, by tearing their PDP membership cards.

"I have told them to join the party that is interested in their welfare and the overall development of the state.

"PDP has no interest in what becomes of the state and the people, but their pockets.

"This was why they said I was not loyal because I refused to share the money meant to develop the state while I was the governor. That was why they started fighting me.

"The PDP, whether at the local, state or federal level can't do anything for us, it is only the APC that can make us a proud people through development," Osunbor stated.

Addressing the rally, the APC governorship candidate, Mr Godwin Obaseki, said that Edo people, having produced great sons and daughters in various sectors of the polity, deserved the best.

He said that he was in the best position to govern and offer the people the best, beind part of Oshiomhole's success story.

Obaseki promised to not only continue with the laudable projects of the Adams Oshiomhole government, but to take it to another level through job creation and human empowerment.

70 members of the PDP defected to the APC at the rally.

EFCC To Seize Diezani’s Assets In America

Ex-minister ‘acquired properties in associates’ names’

Former Petroleum Resources Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke is likely to lose some United States properties traced to her.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is probing Mrs Alison-Madueke for over $10 billion slush funds. It has initiated a process for the seizure of the assets – in line with United States laws.

EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Magu has just returned from the United States where he discussed with the authorities how to attach the properties, The Nation learnt yesterday.

In the last one year, the EFCC has traced assets and items worth about $10billion to Mrs. Alison-Madueke and her business associates, Mr. Kola Aluko and Chief Jide Omokore.

Some of the assets include an $18million peoperty (over N6.3billion at N350 exchange rate) in Abuja.

A top EFCC source, who spoke in confidence, said: “We have located some assets allegedly owned by Diezani and some of her business associates in the United States. We are already collaborating with the US Government to attach these assets.

“In fact, the EFCC chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, spent about one and a half weeks in the US to work with the relevant agencies to trace Diezani’s properties, some of which are believed to have been secured through business fronts like Kola Aluko. “We have submitted relevant documents to the US authorities in order to facilitate the seizure of the assets.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “Some of these properties were acquired through some business fronts like Aluko and Omokore. “We even have a in which houses on a street in Switzerland have been traced to an associate of Diezani.” The EFCC is working with anti-graft agencies in Britain and the United States.

“Don’t forget that the EFCC initially secured a Mareva Injunction from Justice O.O. Oguntoyinbo to freeze some foreign accounts and seize some assets linked with Diezani’s associates in the United Kingdom,” the source said.

Accounts have been frozen in some of overseas financial institutions. They include BNP Paribas (Switzerland), LGT Bank (Switzerland), Standard Chartered Bank (London),Barclays Bank (London), Standard Energy (Voduz, Switzerland), HSBC (London), Corner Bank (Lugano, Switzerland) and Deutsche Bank (Geneva).

Section 34 (1) of the EFCC Act 2004 empowers the Commission to freeze any account suspected of being used for financial crimes. The section stipulates that “the chairman of the commission or any officer authorised by him may, if satisfied that the money in the account of a person is made through the commission of an offence under this Act or any enactment specified under Section 6(2) (a)-(f) of this Act, apply to the court ex parte for power to issue or instruct a bank examiner or such other appropriate authority to freeze the account.”

The National Crime Agency (NCA) in the UK arrested and quizzed Mrs Alison-Madueke and four others on October 2, 2015 for alleged bribery, corruption and money laundering. Also the EFCC has interrogated five more suspects since her interrogation. The NCA last year obtained permission from a Westminster Magistrate’s Court to seize 27,000 pounds from Alison-Madueke and two other women.

Although NCA detectives have visited the country this year in line with the probe, it was unclear as at press time when she will be formally arraigned in court in the UK. While the UK investigation was in progress, the EFCC uncovered another $115million poll bribery scam in which the ex-minister was implicated.

But Mrs Alison-Madueke has described allegations against her as “cold-hearted” and inhuman because she is ill.

Her statement said in part: “Coming at such a critical time in my life when I am battling cancer, this poorly executed propaganda bares on its face like tribal marks, a clearly malicious attempt to victimise an innocent woman in what appears an exaggerated plot to validate and give credibility to the anti-corruption crusade under Nigeria’s new regime. “People who are battling cancer or those who have lost their loved ones to this medical condition understand what I am going through at this time.

“This is what makes me ponder at the cold-heartedness of those who will go any length to defame and destroy in the name of propaganda. What happened to our shared humanity? ”I have absolute regard for the law and believe that people who have breached the laws that govern societies should be made to face the wrath of the law.

“But in a civilized society, a responsible government owes its citizens absolute commitment to the principles of rule of action know it.law, equity, fairness and justice. I have been wrongfully and maliciously maligned and those behind this reckless “I leave them to posterity, their conscience and above all the Almighty God who is the final judge of all.”

We Regret Voting For Buhari In 2015, He Deceived Us – Chibok Community

Members of the Chibok community, on Monday, expressed disappointment with the President Muhammadu Buhari’s-led Federal Government over its handling of the abducted school girls.

The residents during a rally in conjuction with the BringBackOurGirls movement in Abuja, said they regretted voting for Buhari in the 2015 presidential election.

They expressed disappointment over the inability of the Buhari’s government to take measures to rescue the over 200 school girls abducted by the Boko Haram terrorist group from their school in Chibok,Borno State, two years ago.

The Chairman of the Chibok Community in Abuja, Hosea Tsambido, said members of the Community and BBOG voted massively for Buhari as against his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, a decision they seriously regret.

Tsambido said, “They tell us that our girls seen in the latest video was merely an arrangement.

“No one has spoken to the family of any of the Chibok girls since the last video was released, by the terrorists. We regret our votes. We regret it.

“We were promised that the president would visit Sambisa, after becoming president. We were also told that within two weeks our girls would be rescued.

“But over one year now, there is no tangible statement about our girls. The presidency has stated instead that it is confused.”

Senators Reject Buhari’s Emergency Powers Bill, Say It’ll Turn Him Into A Tyrant

The move by President Muhammadu Buhari to secure emergency powers aimed at addressing the nation’s economic crisis may not see the light of the day, as senators yesterday rejected the proposed bill, saying Buhari was seeking to transform himself into a tyrant and would foist a dictatorship on the nation.

The bill entitled, “Emergency Economy Stabilisation Bill 2016”, will be sent to the National Assembly by the president upon resumption from its summer vacation and after the Eid el Kabir holidays.

However, given the reaction of some senators to the proposed emergency powers being sought by Buhari through the bill, the legislation may be thrown out.
Several senators, who spoke to THISDAY monday, vehemently kicked against it, adding that it was “dead on arrival”.

According to the senators, who did not want to be named, some of the provisions in the bill were unnecessary, describing it as nothing more than a subtle way of avoiding counterpart funding by the Buhari administration.

According to them, if the bill is passed as proposed, the president will gradually transform himself into a dictator and draw Nigeria back to the path of military rule, which it exited 17 years ago.

They said without the so-called emergency powers at his disposal, Buhari has continued to trample on the powers of the legislature, explaining that if given further powers, he would more or less reduce the National Assembly to a rubber stamp like the kinds of legislature that exist in China and Russia.

Accordingly, the senators who spoke to THISDAY vowed to kill the bill before Buhari kills the entire legislature and by extension, the nation’s traumatised democracy.

An unnamed government official had disclosed to reporters at the weekend that Buhari would seek emergency powers from the National Assembly to push his planned stimulus for the economy.

The objectives of the bill will include shoring up the value of the naira, job creation, boosting foreign exchange reserves, reviving the manufacturing sector, and improving power supply.

The quest for emergency powers by the executive is the initiative of the economic team headed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, which has been saddled with the responsibility of reviewing various policies in the country and their effects on the economy.

The economic team examined the state of the nation and concluded that there was urgent need to take some drastic decisions that the nation’s extant laws do not provide for.

This assumption by the team was predicated on the belief that the recession might last longer than expected and Nigerians would not get the desired respite, which is the goal of this government.
As provided in the bill, the president is seeking unfettered powers to set aside some extant laws and simultaneously be empowered to come up with an economic recovery initiative within the next one year.

Among others, the bill also seeks to empower Buhari to abridge the procurement process with a view to guaranteeing stimulus spending on critical sectors of the economy; make orders to favour local contractors/suppliers in contract awards; abridge the process of sale or lease of government assets to generate revenue; and allow virement of budgetary allocations to projects that are urgent, without a recourse to the National Assembly.

It also seeks to amend laws such as the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Act, so that states that cannot access their cash trapped in the commission’s accounts as a result of their inability to meet the counterpart funding can do so.

You Cannot Force Workers Into Farming, Labour Tells Governors

Labour leaders and other stakeholders have condemned the move by Imo, Benue and Sokoto to reduce the working hours and days in the states.
They said, in separate interviews, that the development was illegal, unconstitutional and a fundamental breach of the International Labour Organisation Convention.
Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue had directed civil servants to use Fridays for farming, while Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo pushed for a law that provides for three days for work and two days for farming.
The Nigeria Labour Congress President, Ayuba Wabba, said that “the policy is against all know labour laws and international treaties of the International Labour Organisation.
He said, “It is something that we have already rejected and condemned, you cannot force people to go into farming.
“Even, if you will to do that, it must be through a process of consultation because these workers are not slaves.
“In industrial relations, the issue of consultation, collective bargaining is used before a policy is actually adopted and in this respect there was no consultation.”
He said that the new public work policy of Imo government was in conflict with the National Labour Law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Wabba said that national law stipulated eight hours for work per day and 40 hours of work per week which was in accordance with the ILO standard.
He said that the governor was known for non-payment of salaries to workers and that this might be strategy in the long run to cut down payment.
He said, “Workers in that state are working under very serious conditions that are inhuman and therefore certainly, it is going to affect productivity.”
He warned that any state government that tried to enforce workers to act against the ILO convention or labour law of the country would be resisted.
Mr Austin Chilakpo, the Nigeria Labour Congress council Chairman in Imo, decried the governor’s directive, adding that before the bill was passed by the House, the union had rejected it.
Also, the Chairman,Medical and Health Workers Union in Imo, Mr Francis Nzewata, condemned the arrangement, describing it as impunity.
A retired permanent secretary in the state Ministry of Economic Planning, Mr Ethelbert Ejiofor, also criticised the reduction of work days.
Similarly, Chief Stanley Ugama, a former Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, noted that the decision was against the workers’ interest.
“No governor has the right to reduce working hours because labour laws and practices are universal and not confined to a particular area or setting.”
In his reaction, Prof. Chubah Ezeh of Anambra State University, said in Awka that the move by Okorocha to reduce work days of civil servants was unconstitutional and “military in nature’’.
Ezeh, a professor of Political Economy, noted that working hours and days was a constitutional matter which could not be changed without altering the constitution of the country.
“I do not see any sense in such pronouncement or where he manufactured such an unconstitutional idea, which sounds authoritarian or military in nature.
Also commenting, the President of Ndi-Igbo Unity Forum, Mr Augustine Chukwudum, advised Okorocha not to tamper with Imo workers’ salaries.
“If he cannot be creative to use the vast resources in the state to create wealth and pay his workers; let him resign honourably,’’ Chukwudum said.
